It's long word access all the time, so no worries here. But the trouble is how the C2P works:

<write long>
<do more stuff while the long is written>

i.e. if you speed up memory access ("write long") it wont help us because now CPU is the bottleneck -- writing the longs takes (roughly) as much as the "do stuff" (and these two are done in parallel), so if "write long" takes less time, the code is actually less effective (we have to wait for the result until we can write it again).
Changing it to a true chunky buffer, wohoa, that would speed up things. If anyone with SV would like to give it a try, drop me an email, compiling / changing Quake isn't very hard.
