I perfectly understand the situation: you have invested much time and money in this project( without deriving any financial benefit). It's like a modern act of philanthropy to the Atarians and I have great respect for that.
It would be a bastard to criticize your initiative( and it's not my purpose) so please, don't take what I say as reproaches but rather a different point of view.
Let's get back to the point: I've never asked for anything because, as you say, I came after the prototype was finished.
And it would useless and rude to come several months after to say: "hey guys, the right way was to do like this or like that".
However after reading the final specs, I was disappointed so I spoke with 2 or 3 Atarians involved( directly or not) in the project and I asked various questions like "why the old atari ports?" or "why the PCI form for the motherboard( it could make things awkward to put it in a standard case)?"
They all told me the same thing:
1) we pass the remark but they absolutely wanted to integrate the old Atari ports.
2) we debated heatedly about the USB and DVI ports, at first, it was not even planned.
At that time, I realized we wanted different things: I wanted a computer software-compatible, you wanted a computer *also* hardware-compatible( in a way).
I understand that, as you say, "different users have different wishes" and I respect your choices but we wanted different things.
Now let me answer some of your comments.
-> "we include them and several people told us they are happy about this fact".
If by "several", you mean "a majority", let me tell you I'm quite surprised!
I hardly imagine that there are people who prefer to use an old mouse that gets dirty easily rather than a new laser mouse or an old ASCI disk rather than a huge and modern SATA hard disk.
And if these people exist, I would be surprised if they are a majority especially as that has pushed up the price of the Firebee even if only a few tens of euros( but I could be wrong).
-> "MIDI is mandatory".
It's your opinion. The MIDI port will be useful for a few people only if softwares like Cubase are useable and should this happen, it's perfectly possible to use an USB->MIDI adapter( or serial, //, etc..).
-> "I am sorry that you felt that you or your opinion were "not important". Because that´s not true."
So it was a misunderstanding, just different point of view.
Personally, if I can give my opinion( now useless, I know :-), I opted for something as simple as possible( just IDE - or better, SATA ! - USB, DVI and sound input/output) on a standard micro-atx board.
If people wanted the compact flash or SD port, cheap IDE adapters( who don't require drivers) exist.
For the serial, //, MIDI or old game port, as I said, USB adapters are available and once the USB stack done, the drivers would be easy to do.
I completely skipped the PS/2, ROM, ASCI, SCSI, etc.., and Atari keyboard/mouse ports.
The FPGA chip is cool, I like the idea so why not but it is more expensive than 100 euros, it was not essential.
With the money saved, I proposed( if possible)the machine at the same price (ie 599 euros without VTA and shipping) but with a cheap HD and a nice micro-atx case, that way the users only have to plug the cable into the socket to get a computer ready to use.
Of course, I'm not saying it was the best way but it was just my point of view.
-> "Maybe if you recognise how important people count your software, you will get more motivation again. If I can do anything about motivation, please let me know"
I'm pretty embarrassed… Thank you but I don't see what you can do.
Just keep in mind that I haven't lost my motivation only because of the Firebee( it was a straw on the camel's back and only a disappointment).
I wish you every success with this project!
