A bit late but just to mention...
In a receive loop, you could optimize the conversion to 1 instruction if you only need 0xABCD signed to 0xABCD00, or two instructions if you need 0xABCD signed low to 0xFFABCD.
In either way, it would be fast enough for the DSP to handle while the CPU moves data to the host port I think.
