I experimented a bit with it this evening. I have noticed some strange behaviour when manipulating D0SEL manually. I guess the OS is timing things properly. In a couple of situations I noticed the floppy motor stayed on when switching D0SEL prematurely after an OS floppy access.

Basically I think its fairly safe to tamper with the signal as long as a good time has occurred since the last floppy access.
