If you're writing for STE, Falcon you also have 16 blitter halftone registers to use as short-word addresses for temporary stuff. Not much use on an ST but otherwise it might be more practical than hitting palette registers in some cases. Can also used while blitting providing HOP is set right.

Finding a safe spot in the area $200+ works too, as Defjam says. I used this long ago and got it slightly wrong, corrupting some TOS bits. Didn't actually notice until I checked a better memory map much much later :-)

The 68k's PC-relative addressing modes are restrictive - mostly limited to source EAs - not many (any?) destination EAs I think. This makes them difficult to use efficiently. Lots of sensible-looking operations turn out to be not legal.
