i might check it out for you at the weekend when i can access my tt. as assumed by evil the tt-shifter does hardware linedoubling in the st-compatible modes since the HBL gets triggered each halfline (i.e. VGA scanline) - i noticed this while programming the display routine for the wolf3d tiltle picture where the palette is changed at the end of each ST-scanline.
hard to tell if the linedoubling feature is accessible via any straight software level, but the resolution switch suggested by you might work out.
