Just checked videl hardware registers at
http://www.atari-st.lovely.net/atari-st-docs/hardware/memorymap_hollis.txt
In fact, it is HDB/HDE (horizontal display begin and end) registers you have to modify.
You must also set HBB/HBE (horizontal border begin and end) to the current HDB/HDE setting (before modifying them) or you will see the display moving.
