Hmmm, one leaves for a week and huge discussions about disk mag file sizes start on DHS :) OK lets put some things right here:

1) I wouldn't drop a contribution to achieve a smaller filesize.

2) The Alive shell is currently using a certain packer, this packer can only compress to a more of less fixed ratio for each file, like every other packer which is available too, of course it would be possible to replace it with another one, but who knows if it will achieve better compression results. FYI the contained packer is ICE.

3) It is indeed possible to split the mag into two independent halves. But this would also mean too put twice the work into QA since you would have to check three mags instead of one. In fact it would be more work to generate splitted issues than to split the files and rejoin them afterwards especially if you have a HDD.

4) If people don't have a HDD, it would be a real reason to split the mag into DD disk size just to reach the readers. However we are offering the HTML version as well so it's no big deal to get access to the content.

5) We don't supply a split file variant of the mag since there have been issues with that with other mags in the past. Especially since the splitting utility wasn't included with them, also it’s a pain if you want to rejoin the files on another OS. So we usually leave this part for the "consumer". If you know how to split it, you probably also know how to rejoin the parts. My choice would be the packer ARJ since it is supported on most platforms even on Atari if we should ever go that way.

6) I asked evil to set up a new poll, perhaps we can vote on that topic soon, to see what the scene thinks about it.
