Some people have been asking
about smaller and more frequent
issues of our favourite diskmags;
I don't think that this is very
likely for Alive, there are good
reasons why.
Firstly the personal preference
for the editorial team is for a
larger issue. With that, you get
longer and more in-depth articles
and a more impressive issue
overall. That is what we are
about! Also, I'd like to put
in even more pictures in my
articles than the shell
currently allows. This tends to
bump up the size factor too ;-)
Paradoxically, the uneven and
often slow scene activity level
is a cause as well. In the olden
days of the ST scene, it was
easier to release small to medium
sized diskmags on a frequent
basis, as you had a higher and
steady level of general activity.
Now, the activity we get tends
to be concentrated in particular
clusters of time. Easter springs
to mind for some reason ;-) It
would be hard to release a
diskmag after the summer period.
This might satisfy the smallness
criteria, as it would be filled
with fresh air!
If we were to go to more frequent
issues, we would have to whip
the contributors a lot harder
too! This also includes those
nice people who made the shell
graphics and music, as well as
those writing for us.
Diskmags had much more of a hot
news function than they do now,
they were also in a competitive
market for getting an "exclusive"
out first. Therefore there was a
certain pressure to release
early which isn't there now.
Of course we can always try our
best to optimise, and we're
trying not to leave it so long
between issues, as with the
extra long pause between issues
8 and 9. The ideal wait time
between issues would be something
like 6 months, and that should
also stop it growing too much
out of hand as well :-)
But when it comes down to it, I
don't think we can promise the
sort of diskmag, in size terms,
that people fondly remember from
the good old days ;-)
Damn, I should have saved and kept that for an article!
