that was probably peylow's article in ucm? raycasting is a technique for avoiding overdraw. it doesn't have much todo with the speed of the mapper rout.
i think nowadays other techniques are used to avoid overdraw in "true-3d" stuff. occlusion culling for instance. but don't ask me more. i don't know anything about it. better goto www.gamedev.net computer graphics forum for more info..
