Having read a couple of service manuals, i think the YM is always clocked with 2MHz in any Atari ST compatible machine. This imposes a limit of how many transfers the YM can actually do per second. I do not know enough about the YMs internal so the bus logic might be decoupled to a certain degree but from a certain point on, even a much faster CPU will not achieve higher sample rates simply because the YM is limited by its own clock.
