Megademo issues

The other day I was discussing with other oldschooler about participating or not in a megademo.

One of the issue I see, is that continuing to do megademos, and releasing them only as a single monolithic entity is seriously harming the Atari scene. I explain.

I 2005, we made this 20 years anniversary demo, all together. On pouet you can find it here:
http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=20584

This demo was made by 'atari scene collective'. WTF ??? it looks like anonymous alcoholics or something like that. Because pouet does not support more than three group names (or used to) for one prod, this prod is associated to no group at all.

The NFO is not better, it does not state any group name, or any screen name.

Just as a remainder, the following groups/individuals were involved:

Atari Freaks
Atari Legend
Bits
Creators
DHS
gwEm
MJJ Productions
No Extra
Oxygene
Paradize
Paradox
Reservoir Gods
Scum Of The Earth
ST Knights
Stax

The sad thing, is that if you are fan of one group, let's say Paradox, this demo (their screen) does not even appear in the list of their productions.

I like the concept of Megademo, it's a nice cooperative effort, but from a communication point of view it sucks majorly. Add to that the fact that showing your screen to a friend means "boot the floppy, then you pass the intro, go to the main menu, and you move to the 5th door on the left, then you press space, voila !".

My suggestion, is to make sure that every screen can be run from the loader/menu as well as from the desktop, and then when the demo is published get one downloadable entry for each demo screen, with correct associated group name, info file and screenshot, plus an entry for the complete demo itself with intro, menu, reset screen plus actual screens, with on this entry page links toward every other screen entries.

This way we get visibility (as many pouet entries as there are screens), the credits/link lists are complete, and instead of "one atari demo was made in 2009" you get "yeah, there's been 18 atari demo made in 2009".

About visibility: the 20 years demo to this day has 78 comments. More or less zero has more or less 30 more comments just by itself.

I'd like to hear everybody's oppinion about that.

Regards,

Dbug
