How many devices are connected to the IDE cable? I had similar problems, but with the CD-ROM. I thought the IDE cable is too long. But when I replaced the CD-ROM (which worked fine in a PC) the problem was solved. Maybe your IDE devices just don't like each other. Some time it happens ...
