As was previously suggested, the higher bus speed was indeed the problem - swiching the jumper position on JP1 to turn bus acc off suddenly made it possible to boot from the IDE HD in CT60 mode.
This issue could perhaps be good to have listed in the "Known problems & compatibility" section?
Anyway, it will be interesting to see if a new IDE HD will be enough to get around this problem, or if I need to get a SCSI->IDE adaptor (Hi Evl) in order to get things rolling again.
