Interesting, but I don't think its only the cartridge port unless this is strange co-incidence...
I did some FTP tests of a 40MB file from my Mac to the EtherNAT on a 100mbit/s link, in MiNT.
This is the log transcript when I was chatting to Falcon060 a few nights ago: (I can't be bothered to type it)

0:47:17 Coda: 40000000 bytes sent in 00:47 (827.27 KB/s) @85mhz
0:47:30 Coda: so you can see its really crapping out at higher speeds
