I agree we're far far too late for a architecture switch, be it PPC, x86 or anything else. I guess some sort of JIT machine for 68k code is the only answer for faster TOS-clones.

However, PPC isn't going away, it's widley used in embedded systems, IBM servers (Power 6 coming soon) and last but not least, all three major game consoles uses PPC cores (which is magnutudes larger market than Apple). Apple probably had to ditch them due to lack of useful laptop chips based on the 970 and above cores.
