Well I've only programmed a bit in Java, but I think (and may be wrong) that it now compiles into bitcodes instead of being a sluggish interpreter like it used to be. About javascript, I briefly looked at draconis and it claims to support javascript but the page was dated at 2001 :-P So if you guys seem to like Highwire, thats good enough for me!
