Sounds like the lm386 op-amp of which there are 3 in the falcon 1 for the left output, 1 for the right and 1 for mono output.

This happens espically when driving external speakers. The ohms required for this cause a form of short circuit in the chip damaging vital components in side.

I too have the same problem. which now gives me reason to fix it. I'll let you know my results a detail the fix.
