I've been looking at this too.
A total rewrite of render.c and possible vdp.c should give quite a speed boost. One could even use the native hardware scrolling.
There is an open source Z80 emulator written in 68k assembler called "z80-68k" (by Günter Woigk & Sankt Johann). It works a bit different from the one used in SMS, but it could perhaps be adapted. It lacks some instructions, but I don't know if this would interfere in this case..
Combine these two and it could run smooth on a CT2.
Personally, I won't spend much time on this, since I am more interested in making it run on Nova, Eclipse and future graphicscards with a real chunky display. And - I'd rather spend my time on new ports. I might rewrite the PSG emulator a few times though..
The source is free for anyone to continue digging into it! I'd prefer if we could combine all changes made into one release, naturally.
