Also it helps to "tin" the post you are soldering to. It's not tinning in the real sense but just apply a tiny bit of solder basically removes the dirt and oxidation and provides a fresh surface to solder to. Makes it much easier when you have to actually join the wire properly. Also the iron makes ALL the difference. I have a high wattage ESD safe Weller iron with micropoint tip and I don't know how I got by without it.
