It's not easy to manage physics with variable framerate :/
All my intro/menu animation are time based though.

The x2 x0.5 is very strange, the game use triple buffering, so it should not be "vbl" dependent, so, if 2 call to the gameplay routine are too fast on your machine by a factor of 2, running the routine one time should resolve the issue.
but I'm very surprised that you get something that seems to be higher than 30fps on a 66mhz machine, because another one tested the game on his CT60/supervidel and had 29fps @66mhz, and 32fps @95mhz
