To buy a widescreen monitor seems to be a waste of screen space for most things except perhaps a very specialised GEM video mode.
I have two screens which I am happy with:
Eizo Flexscan S1701SA 17"
NEC Multisync LCD 2070vx 20"
The smaller one I take with me to demoparties and such and the bigger I use at home. Both have excellent image with the Falcon 800x600 resolution (no hardware mods needed for that) and both syncs to or below 50Hz.
The only downside is that they don't do RGB/TV-modes.
