I get similar problmes trying to run my falcon at 768x608.
I'm pretty sure it's due to the fact that LCD monitors convert the analog signal from their VGA input into digital signals, which they need to be able to display the picture in the same way they do with DVI input. To make things simple the LCD monitors only consider a certain setup of different resolutions, and all unusual resolutions "in between" get interpolated. It very much looks like that on my LCD anyway. :)
