As for an asm person, this doesn't sound very motivating.
I'd say your chances are better if you deliver a finished product and shout for help to optimize the routines afterwards (if ever needed). There's plenty of free libraries available, I guess you just have to figure out the bridge between gfa and C but that's another topic.
