You've no idea how many 'doh!' moments I've had with that chip - finding that there's always some better way and I've been doing it wrong all along :)

The trick above is actually most useful for shifting - less for arithmetic. e.g. if you want a table of shift coefficients which includes a shift of 0, it can be done with a signed mul and -ve table coefficients. Otherwise it just becomes a painful special case.
