well, the value $ff:800000 is -1 when in an accumulator. In all other cases (x0, y0, memory etc..) then $800000 represents -1.0.

The DSP does deal with -1.0 normally, just not 1.0.

Still, there's no harm in sticking to the -0.999 -> 0.999 range if it works for your program. It is at least symmetric.
