During the time I was working on the CATA streaming video project (the early half of development), I had been looking at the compression side of things in addition to the converter/displayer - motion-compensating out as much as possible to get the datarate down for other more normal kinds of storage (the vid below is quite a good example of that taken to extremes on another machine!)

I still have some of that incomplete work sitting in my convertor. Obviously for that to work there would have to be a trade between compression mechanism and display size.
However I think Ppera's approach is more about use cases for his CATA drivers and in the end I didn't work on the final version (i.e. Cyg's version of the player), which I think (?) is still necessarily a constant-rate device to fit best with the transfer mechanism and available transfer time (and very impressive to watch!).
