Thanks for the info,
It is true that symbols do remain if you omit the X+ flag but I don't see XDEFs or any other symbols with X+ present. I didn't exactly check properly but scanned it by eye in hex view and saw nothing.
It's also not using extended GST/DRI format by default, otherwise Hatari would happily extract them with 'symbols prg' command.
However I can now extract normal (truncated, short form) symbols with Eero's gst2ascii tool and load the ascii list instead. It's just inconvenient to do so, and a bit crap because I'll have to go round the code shorting all the long names :)
I might give newer VASM a try but it doesn't look too promising as you point out...
