you're right, fullscreen is a bit different. In a fullscreen dot demo (I think it's the reset demo of 20 years atari celebration), I use that trick, only 4 cycles added:
;drawing routine, the screen offset if stored in D0.W
or.w d1,d0 ; XOR #$8000, transform unsigned value to signed value
move.w d0,n(a1) ; patch clearing instruction
;clear
move.w d0,n(a1) ; offset is signed now, just add 32768 to your screen ad, and it works
total is 28 cycles instead of 24cyles
