I think Nullos player is unique in that regard that it transfer samples over DMA; yep. Makes up for a much faster mod-replay than the generic Bitmaster or similar.
I have some vague memories of problems on CT2, but I can't really say for sure after all these years.
Speaking of unique players; Bitmasters DSPMOD96 is still something I find pretty fun. It uploads everything to the DSP, note data, samples, the lot. You can even STOP or buserror the CPU, and the DSP keeps playing the mod :) An ACE player like this would be so great (even if it only did synth and no samples) :) 0% CPU !
