Bummer - thanks to Swe I found out what was wrong. Internal buffer sizes for TA were set for insane sizes.
Use the TA menu bar: Editor > Information > Reorganize to set the size of memory to be kept free from TA use.
Now I have 2MB free which is enough for 99% of my needs.
