How to calculate MOD time?

Hi,

Frankly, i know exactly one big nothing about modules, trackers and of course players so I was always wondering, how it is possible (if ever) to calculate the time which the given module is supposed to run? Practically any player offers counts like patterns, positions, speed, repeat flags and perhaps some other things but is it possible to convert it into a time? I see some libraries/plugins can do that but as I said, know nothing about it so I can't read the sources ;-)

Any explanation for dummies welcome ;)
