i never calculated it but it could be based on this:
512 KB RAM
- minus system variables (~2 KB)
- minus videoram (~32 KB)
that's around 480 KB, maybe desktop uses some memory for itself. but what stops you from writing simple Malloc(-1) code to see the exact number :)
btw there's a possibility to determine free memory also from desktop -- since TOS 2.05/06 (which should be compatible also with 520ST) you can see it in "Desktop configuration" menu entry.
