maybe you should try it in "real" MagiC first. I remember having similar problem in TOS 4.01/02 (and not 4.04) when some system call didn't work as expected (relative paths didn't work).
try to enter absolute path, compile it with pure c under magicpc and you'll see if it's gcc or magicpc problem.
