1. Is STE DMA sound count register a pointer to where the actuall DMA chip is within a currently replayed sample?
if you mean $ffff8909,0B,0D then yes. its a read-only set of registers and it works very well.
You can also use Degas Elite and SWE's wonderful DegaSTe accessory
