(I'm just messing with you guys, you know that?)

To be honest, I think to todays game industry pushes the technology forward more than anything else. Not necessarily due to crappy coding, but because new stuff really needs an insane amount of horsepower to run properly. Consumers want more polygons, dynamic lighting etc. in high resolution.
