LZ78 packer
Posted by: ray Feb,22.2006-18:24

hi there,

at the moment i am busy with finishing my own image codec called BIQ. as a byproduct i ported Mark R. Nelson's '89 excellent LZ78 compression program and wrote a size optimized 68k version of the decoder.

now, its decoding speed isn't anywhere near as fast as the one of LZ77 due to the variable bitlength codes (64kb in roughly 2~3 seconds on a plain 8mhz 68000). i'm sure that could be optimized by the bitfield extraction routine though - as mentioned this is optimized for size not speed. regarding compression ratio, LZ78 is alot more efficient.

my question to you:
would there be any interest at all in me releasing the package seperately or did you rather get used to using traditional packers like ice UPX etc.?

regards,
ray
