Each time I modify register 7, I read it's contents, modify it, and write it back.
Would it be enough to save it's contents during startup and restore it on exit? (and perhaps skip the read-modify step and just write to the register during runtime?)

What's the anti-troll code? That's your personal code to be able to add comments and messages on the dhs.nu site.
Don't have a code or forgot it? Fix it here.
