If you don't want to burn monitor with wrong settings, you'd better use the Xbios functions to setup the screen (especially for st compatible mode, which is not a problem for it). You can even choose 50/60Hz with the video mode code.

And some people may have video extensions with different Videl clock than standard ones (CT2, CT60, Blowup, ScreenBlaster, etc...). If you setup the screen with fixed values for Videl, it simply won't work in this case.
