i admit the clearscreen is really lame (clears every sprite's background even when sprites overlap) and probably some frame specific optimisation could be done. you'd need more than a few hours to get it to 1 VBL, though.. remember the sprites are masked, they all have different animation offsets (no sorting by shift) and the 3D rotation also needs to be calculated + there's all the nifty YM bashing courtesy of Gwem which also takes up a few scans :)

btw the effect idea is really old. going back to Eko's papa was a bladerunner, and they even did it better (rotation of sprites can match object rotation), albeit on falcon. later therapy did the effect in their demo for siliconvention and also escape made a Whip plugin with these cubes (i a very nice pattern).

anyway, i welcome anyone who wants to optimise it, i might learn some things :)
