Flipscreen scrolling would probably be due to the different colours in the pallette of each background picture, as much as it is because the author couldn't scroll the screen, wouldn't it?
I suppose you could switch the pallette as you're scrolling, but that would be a little complex... for some ;-)
Grandad surely was a cool game though... make sure you get the humour right, that is one of the most important parts! :-)
