You will need a small circuit, that clocks the WD1772 with 16MHz, when a HD-floppy is inserted in the HD-drive. The HD-drive has a pin, that indicates, whether a HD-disk or a DD-disk is inserted.
But there are some types of the WD1772 that donīt work with 16MHz (I think WD1772-00-02 is one of this types). To be sure it works you have to use an AJAX from Atari.
As far as I know you donīt need software for this.
