To get decent speed in demos and games on a stock falcon I definitly recomend using assembler.

In my opinion, the best assembler is Devpac 3.1, but it's commercial. There are Assemble by Brainstorm and Turbo Assembler by Sigmasoft as well. Assemble is probably the better choice as Turbo Assembler is in german and doesn't support 030 processors properly.

For audio there's the choice of using modfiles (4-8ch protracker) or mpeg audio layer 2 (mp2) files. Multichannel XM style is too slow to play in demos. Belive it or not but the fastest is the MP2 replayer, using practically 0% cpu (but all of DSP).

For graphics there are many options, a really good program in hicolour which is for free is Escape Paint by, huh.. Escape.

Some links:

Escape Paint: http://files.dhs.nu/files_gfx/escp072.zip
Octalyser tracker (mods): http://files.dhs.nu/files_msx/octa096r.zip

And a a little demosystem for proper start/exit and sequencing demo effects (plus player for mod and mp2): http://files.dhs.nu/files_coding/dhssys13.zip

Also browse around a bit under "Atari utils" to the left on this page, most links are taken from there. But there are more stuff to get.

Ps. Yes MiKRO I know about the BRUTAL BUG in the demosystem..
