Ok, so I followed the rabbit hole a bit because I didn't before - just assumed a couple of things.
Seems that this thing was ripped from the demo linked on the demozoo comments (Code a day). If you boot the demo you'll see it under "boot" section. Without dumping the code I can't tell you what happens in there:
How many bytes were allowed in the compo? 512? 480? Anything else?
Will it work if you write it on a standard floppy?
Does it follow the same assumptions about the state of the system as any boot sector would?
The thing is, I can't tell just from running the demo what the compo rules were so I can't tell you anything. It might be a different definition of what we call as a "bootsector demo".
From what you say, demozoo originally had a disk image that would crash on emulators. So at least there was a try by someone to get it to boot off an actual floppy but it either isn't plain possible or somehow the bootsector was created badly. I also can't know without looking at the file.
But eventually does it matter much? Size coding on 68000 is always a pain in the butt either if you use 480 bytes or 512. I'd still appreciate an effort the same in either case. In any case if you want to be super strict about these things then you might want to mention this but also say that the "standard" rules might have been bent a little bit. Up to you :).
