Oh my goodness... I spent tens of minutes on this and the problem was HD Driver's cache size. I'm afraid to assume why this would matter, I suspect some very, very dirty memory access to low addresses. :)
Anyway, I enjoyed the demo a lot, looking forward to see more from you!
P.S. Next time go for Evil's DHS demosystem as a basis, it will save you (and the users ;)) a lot of trouble. And you'll get VGA for free, too.
