Also I think it would be difficult to do a zoomer that covers maybe half of the screen and keep it running at 50fps?
I don't see that at all. You only need to c2p the fonts real height (in our case I think it was 7 lines, that's a 160x7 c2p without fullscreen) and then movem copy it to more lines. The larger the size, the less overhead from movem read as well (ie, CPU-usage doesn't scale linearly with size).
Perhaps somebody wants to give it a shot someday.
And I think c2p was used back in 1993 for rotozoomers (like Chaos one).
