Well that too, but the Falcon 16-bit audio does wonder for mixing (especially with volume variation).

STe have two 8 bit channels, to play four channels, each sample can only be 7-bit, this reduces quality quite noticeably. Then add 6-bit volume control to this. The already watered down instrument will be further stripped of quality by using much less bits at lower volumes. It can be helped a little by using multiplex though.

On a 16-bit output, you can do the mixing at full bit-quality at all volume levels, it really helps a lot.

If you check some module that fades up, you'll notice that it's much noiser at lower volume on an ST/STe, while on the Falcon (or Amiga.. grrr) it will be perfect all the way.

I guess, doing an internal 16-bit mixer on STe, and run the output data through a good 16-to-8bit conversion (with compression to maximize bits perhaps?) will make things much better. The problem is that the STe probably won't manage to do it in real time, especially not at high mixing rates :-)
