4MB is now the common memory included into the ST real hardware and emulators.
It is also the compo limit, so if I do not use it others will do.
With 4MB I have the opportunity to better synchronize the differents FX with no floppy loading waiting time. But every FX can run with 1MB individually.
40% of the 4MB are used for the datas (pics, textures, heaviest precalcs), 1MB is used for the current displaying FX and 1MB for the next FX precalculations being prepared during the current FX free CPU %.
Moreover with hicolor FX you need more memory, imagine a simple fadein/fadeout : a 128x128 texture weigth 32KB, with 16 fadein/out steps you finally need 512Ko of memory to prepare it before using it...
