hope you don't mind if i answer here though ...

I think you're right, $FFFF8265.w is the STE hardware register sometimes referred to as
"Pixel Offset" (p_o). On the STE, it could be unequal to zero due to some virtual screen
extension so that it's sensible to memorize and restore this register.

Regarding the scroll register, i remember having had trouble on the Falcon, too, when
a line exceeded 292 (252 + 40) words, but i usually use some STE compatible mode.
This is rumoured to affect the palette handling only, but could of course also affect
this register. I should probably spend an afternoon to investigate ... :-)
