Well that's pretty easy to understand. To make high res mono picture you'd have had to buy and extra monitor just for that resolution. I don't think that many artist would have done that considering that at the end only a few persons would have seen the picture and considering the limitations of the format. Also, and most important, artists are legendary known for being broken so they couldn't afford the mono monitor anyway :-)
